How To Tell If Your Tucson Property Has A Termite Problem

September 10, 2021

Most of us spend a lifetime saving and paying for our most costly investment – our home or business. Earthquakes, hurricanes, and tornadoes are catastrophic weather events that can destroy them in just a few seconds. Another destructive force of nature that takes a little more time to destroy your property is the termite. One destructive termite is dreadful, but Tucson has to watch out for two destructive termites.

What Everyone Ought To Know About Termites In Tucson

Termites are proficient at leaving a path of destruction through buildings. If not spotted early, termites can bring about the total collapse of a structure. Over five billion dollars in property damage is due to termite infestations. Considering the damages caused by termites, property owners should be aware of the types of termites in the area that endangers their properties. Two common termites in Tucson are are subterranean termites and drywood termites.

There are three different castes of subterranean termites, and they all have distinct physical differences. The reproductive caste includes a king, queen, and alates (swarmers). The queen is larger than the king. Alates have long, dark brown to almost black bodies and translucent, slightly milky-colored wings.

Their bodies are about ¼ inch to ½ inch long, and they have hairs that you can barely see on their wings (workers and soldiers do not have wings). Workers measure ¼ inch or less and have cream-colored bodies. They also have small jaws. Unlike the workers, the soldiers have large mandibles. Their coloration is usually a creamy white color, like the workers, but their head is darker and more brownish. These termites are the most destructive in the United States.

Unlike the subterranean termite, drywood termite colonies do not have a caste system. Immature termites are white to light brown color with a long, narrow, and oval body, six legs, and antennae. They are the workers of the colony. Drywood termites can measure between 3/8 inches to 1 inch long. These termites infest wood with high moisture content, and they tend to be larger than other termite species.

Regardless of the type of termite, once they are in your home it's important to seek professional help as soon as possible.
